Grown in the Caranavi region coop, Colonia Siete Estrellas (Seven Stars), this green coffee has been part of our House Blend for years now. This is the first time we’ve offered it as a single origin coffee.
Peaberry or, in Spanish caracolillo, is the result of a coffee fruit where only one of the two seeds is fertilized. When both seeds are fertilized, pressure inside the fruit cause one side to flatten out. There is nothing to flatten out a peaberry coffee so it comes out oval or pea-shapped. About 5% of all coffee beans harvested are peaberries.
Peaberry coffees roast slightly differently because they tumble more readily in the roaster. It results in a more even roast. There is a lot of discussion about the quality of the coffee and they usually are unique and high quality coffees to use. I think this is more due to he care in handling and sorting that goes into separating the peaberries from other coffees.
This one is an exceptionally smooth and clean coffee and one that deserves to stand on its own. This is a coop coffee. That is, it is made up of beans from multiple farms that make up the Colonia Siete Estrellas coop. These are some of the best coffee growers in the Caranavi region.
Available as ground or whole bean (our recommendation).
